We are very proud that today our latest production, the animated series Undone, is released exclusively on Amazon. All 8 episodes, written by showrunners Raphael Bob-Waksberg and Kate Purdy (Bojack Horseman), is available worldwide exclusively on Amazon Prime.
Releasing new projects is always exciting, but this one is extra special. Undone perfectly embodies what Submarine is all about: to move international audiences with compelling stories driven by innovative visuals that push the boundaries of the storytelling.
Undone is a half-hour genre-bending animation series that explores the elastic nature of reality through its central character, Alma (Rosa Salazar), a 28-year-old living in San Antonio, Texas. After a near fatal car accident, she discovers that she has a new relationship with time and uses her ability to uncover the truth about the death of her father (Bob Odenkirk). In addition to Salazar (Alita: Battle Angel) and Odenkirk (Breaking Bad), actors are Angelique Cabral, Siddarth Dhananjay (Patty Cake$) and Daveed Diggs (Hamilton).
Submarine co-financed and produced the series together with Michael Eisners’ company Tornante and executive producer Tommy Pallotta (producer of A Scanner Darkly and Waking Life) and Minnow Mountain in Austin. Director is Dutch talent Hisko Hulsing (Cobain: Montage of Heck, Junkyard). The unique visual style of Undone was directed by Hulsing in close collaboration with executive producer Tommy Pallotta, who developed the the rotoscoping technique for Richard Linklater’s animated features Waking Lifeand A Scanner Darkly.
A huge chunk of the animation production for Undone was done in our studio in Amsterdam, including storyboarding, set and character designs, animation and compositing. Almost 1000 actual oil paintings on canvas were produced for the series and served as the backgrounds for the scenes. Over 100 animators were involved across two cities – Amsterdam and Austin. Needless to say, we are extremely delighted that the series has already received outstanding reviews from the world’s most prominent reviewers and entertainment media outlets.
